9 questions team members should ask

"Do not play the role of a victim" is what I often challenge team members to consider. The best teams are made up of high-capacity individuals who play a role where they can have maximum impact. Great team members share what they need from others to thrive, and invite others into similar conversations. Listed below are questions I ask when serving on a team.  They help me do my best work. They help me discern if I’m a good fit and how I can contribute to the team’s success. Review the list and consider suggesting a few additional ones.

  1. Do I know what is expected of me? If not, how do I find out?
  2. Do I have the information, materials and equipment I need to do my best  work?
  3. When and how do I communicate what my needs are to others?
  4. How do I know the plans and needs of other team members?
  5. Based on my gifts, what's the most significant contribution I can make to this team?
  6. What feedback do I need from others to perform well? If it's not provided, how will I obtain it?
  7. In what ways can I affirm the work of my team mates? What would be most meaningful to them? Who have I encouraged this past week?
  8. How well do I care for the needs of the team? Am I over-functioning or under-functioning in this area?
  9. Who on this team could serve as a mentor to me?  To whom might I be a mentor?

These questions cause me to think differently about what it means to be part of the team. They influence what I say and do as a team member. They help me live out of my commitments rather than my excuses. What questions do you need to ask yourself and your team mates?
